Bladder Leaks are embarrassing! While it is completely understandable that no one wants to admit to them, or talk about it, this creates a problem! Everyone thinks they are the only ones suffering from incontinence. If you have it you feel isolated and alone, but you shouldn’t! Our research shows that up to 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 10 men will have symptoms of incontinence at some time in their life. We need to talk about, we need to do what we can to manage it and we need to get back to living happy, confident lives!…Just like these celebrities, who definitely didn’t let incontinence get in the way!
Kris Jenner
As the head of the well-known Kardashian clan, Kris Jenner placed incontinence in the spotlight when she openly admitted to suffering from it on an episode of the family’s reality TV show. “People think they’re the only ones dealing with this… when you realize the woman sitting next to you is probably going through the same, you feel less lonely.”
This famous actor started suffering from bladder leaks in his late 40’s. Initially he to was embarrassed by the condition but soon realized “that millions of Americans dealt with [this problem] everyday”, and even admitted to wearing incontinence products onset.
Talking about a problem is one of the first steps to getting help. While “curing” incontinence isn’t always possible, there are many treatment and management options available that lessen the severity and the impact that bladder leaks can have.
On a recent episode of the Graham Norton Show, Kate Winslet admitted to suffering from Stress Incontinence since having her children. “I can’t jump on trampolines anymore, I wet myself” Kate said. She also said “It’s amazing, 2 sneezes, I’m fine. Three, it’s game over”.
Bladder leakage can have many possible causes. One of the more common causes is leaking due to stress incontinence. Anything that increases the pressure in the abdomen places “stress” on the bladder. If the muscles of the urinary area, e.g., the pelvic floor (the muscle layer that supports the base of your abdomen) and your sphincters (the circular muscles that open on close openings), are weaker than they should be, it results in a leak.
“Most people don’t know this, but I actually wore diapers pretty regularly during High School.” said Katy. Her incontinence was due to a Urinary Tract Infection.
Famous horror author Stephen King still keeps incontinence products close at hand, just in case! His incontinence was also due to a urinary tract infection that has been succesfully treated.
Seeking help is critical to managing incontinence. There are doctors, physiotherapists and nurses that work specifically with pelvic health and are there to ensure that you know exactly what is causing the problem and how you can manage it!
Bladder Leaks should not stop you leading a full and happy life! If you suffer from incontinence, take the following steps today:

1. Talk to someone! Talk to us, your friend, your healthcare professional, we are all here to help!
2. Confirm the cause. There are many possible causes for bladder leaks, and each will have a  different management and treatment plan. Accurate diagnosis is therefore critical! Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional that specializes in pelvic health.
3. Commit to the plan! Once you know what you can do about it, start to do it! For many people managing incontinence has a lifestyle change in the management plan, and this often makes a big difference!
4. Make sure you have good quality absorbent products!
